Venice

Venice sits on its lagoon, made of water and stone: canals instead of streets, bridges instead of directions. Peeling plaster, salt-eaten corners, laundry over narrow courtyards. Between palaces and churches the city still works: boats with crates, rubbish collected by barge.

Mornings are the vaporetto engine and footsteps on stone. Away from the main routes, evenings go quiet and the water throws light onto the ceilings. Venice is a labyrinth you don't read. You walk it.
