Madeira

Madeira is a volcanic island in the Atlantic where mountains rise straight out of the sea and the weather flips from one ridge to the next. Above Funchal, terraces of bananas and vines. Inland, levadas, the old irrigation channels, run along the slopes past waterfalls, moss and ferns. The coast is black and sharp: cliffs, rocks, waves, hardly any beaches.

On the trails you hear only water in the channel and your own steps. Madeira is an island to walk slowly.
